Hello! It's Julia! I just was doing the Hall of Saints at my school. It's where we dress up and tell about the saint we are dressed up as. My friend Grace dressed up as Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, and I learned a lot about her by hearing the story Grace told me. Oh! I have a great idea! How about I tell it to you?
Kateri Tekakwitha was the daughter of a Mohawk chief. When she was four years old, her parents and brother died of smallpox. Kateri also had the disease, but she didn't die. The disease left her with scars on her face, as well as that she was almost blind. She was taken in my her uncle.
In 1667, her village was visited by a few Jesuit missionaries. Her uncle hated Christians, but Kateri was in love with the faith when she heard about it. Her uncle allowed her to be baptized as long as she didn't leave the village. After being baptized, Kateri prayed a lot, made crosses from twigs, and refused to marry. Many of the people in her village began to be mean to her because of her new faith, so Kateri escaped to the Saint Francis Xavier mission. There, she received First Communion and made a permanent vow of virginity.
Kateri spent her last years of her life in the Saint Francis Xavier mission. She died of tuberculosis when she was 23.
Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, PRAY FOR US!!!
